Ferry design competition 2014

This year’s specifications are for a ferry that can carry up to 200 passengers as well as freight on an open water route for the Pacific Island nation of Papua New Guinea. Ideally the design should also have applicability to other Pacific Island nations.

In 2013, the WFSA top prize of $5000 went to the student team from the University of British Columbia, Canada, for its monohull vessel with exceptional stability characteristics. The entry won because of its emphasis on design features and cost and fuel analysis.

The second prize of $3000 went to the team from Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune, India, for its monohull vessel that was extremely stable with good under-keel clearance.

Two third prizes of $1000 went to Istanbul Technical University in Turkey and University of Applied Sciences, Bremen, Germany.

Students interested in entering the 2014 competition should notify the executive director WFSA by email at ferrysafety@gmail.com between 11 January and 1 April 2014 detailing name, academic institution and contact information, as well as name and contact information for a faculty advisor.

WFSA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving ferry safety in developing nations by improving vessel design and crew training. It was formed to supplement the Ferry Safety Project led by Interferry and the International Maritime Organization.
