Field test success for cut-out procedure

The test was conducted on the container ship HS Humboldt of Reederei Hansa Shipping. The vessel is powered by a 9K90MC-C engine with three TCA77 turbochargers. One was cut out by the installation of a blind flange before the turbine and another after the compressor.

After four months in service, the cut out turbocharger had some fouling from exhaust particles within the labyrinth sealing but this had no effect on restarting. A small but uncritical oil leakage occurred on the compressor and turbine side bearings because lube oil pressure was above normal operating range. There was no wear or deformation of journal bearings and no rotor damage.

MAN has therefore approved a TCA turbocharger cut out with an installed rotor for a maximum period of six months. Exceeding that, the rotor has to be removed and the turbocharger must be preserved and taken out of service.
