Fincantieri set to build more passenger ships

Carnival, the cruise ship operator, has awarded Fincantieri?s Monfalcone yard an order for a single 110,00g cruise ship, and has instructed the yard to lengthen two similar vessels it already has on order there.

Under the $600 million deal, the Monfalcone yard will build a lengthened version of the Carnival Destiny class design, producing a vessel with a length of some 290m.

The two other newbuildings, named Carnival Conquest and Carnival Glory will be ?stretched? by around 18m while in build, bringing them up to the same dimensions as the latest newbuilding.

At about the same time that the order for the Carnival newbuilding was signed, Fincantieri also announced that it had won an order to build a 175m, 2,200-passenger car ferry for SNCM in France.

Due to be delivered in time for the summer season in 2002, the newbuilding will be capable of carrying 700 vehicles.
