Finnish based consortium works towards smart green shipping

INTENS, the VTT Technical Research Centre coordinated Finnish research-industry collaborative consortium, has jointly committed over €13 million over the next three years, with €5.6 million funding support from Business Finland.

“The collaboration and funding from INTENS project allows us to create market-leading voyage planning services, with the potential to reduce 30% of yearly shipping CO2 emissions,” said, Kari Sillanpää, head of R&D at Meyer Turku Oy, one consortium member.

High expectations

Finland has been one of the leading countries in the digitalisation and automation of the marine industries.

The INTENS project aims to further deepen and uniquely integrate digital transformation into the whole chain of the marine cluster, from R&D to innovation, design, manufacturing and operation.

One consortium member, maritime software, services and data analysis provider NAPA, has just received major funding from INTENS and Business Finland to enhance its work improving technical and operational performance, particularly around unnecessary expenditure on bunkers.

The INTENS (Integrated Energy Solutions to Smart and Green Shipping) consortium consists of 14 Finnish marine companies: Wärtsilä, NAPA, Meyer Turku, Dinex Ecocat, Deltamarin, Vahterus, Protacon Technologies, Parker Hannifin, JTK Power, 3D Studio Blomberg, Jeppo Biogas, Visorc, Tallink Silja and NLC Ferry.

It also consists of five renowned research organisations including Aalto University and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd.
