Foreship hull form for Finnish ecoship

Meriaura signed for the two 4,7000dwt Ice Class 1A VG cargo carriers at Dutch yard Royal Bodewes in January, with the first vessel to be delivered in July 2016. The owner expects EcoCoasters to make up at least half of its fleet (currently 20 vessels) within five years, and is already developing a larger model.

Foreship worked with Meriaura and Aker Arctic Technology at concept stage on the new vessels, which are envisaged running on MGO or biofuel. Dual-fuel propulsion will be delivered by an ABC 8DZC medium-speed main engine.

Risto Ajanko, senior hydrodynamics specialist Foreship said: “Altogether 45 hull alternatives were considered, of varying lengths and hydrostatics, with the aim of minimising resistance while achieving small wave formation and good wake field for the propeller. The main dimensions of the EcoCoaster were optimised, achieving the best ratio between capacity and fuel consumption.”

The hull form includes a long and narrow bow that is said to achieve lower resistance in ice channels, with flare angles minimising additional resistance in waves. The aft shape features a narrow gondola to enhance wake field for the propeller.
