Fuel cell engined yacht
A fuel cell from MTU Friedrichshafen is used as a propulsion system for a yacht. The propulsion unit is called CoolCell ?a fuel cell that functions at 65°C, almost 600°C cooler than MTU?s hot fuel cell. It provides electrical energy for the on-board power supply as well as the propulsion system.
As it emits no pollutants, the yacht is exceptionally environmentally friendly. MTU says there is virtually no noise, vibration or smell during operation.
Four fuel cells, each with a electric output of 1.2kW and 9 lead acid batteries give the vessel a range of 225 km at 6km per hour.
The propeller is powered by an electric motor, with hydrogen tanks and electronic controls making up the balance of plant.
The CoolCell system works with Proton Exchange Membrane technology. Constructed as a modular system, it can be configured according to the out put and range required. MTU claim the unit can be used for commercial and military shipping, trains and cars.
