GasLog reaches smart maintenance milestone

Awarded by ABS, the notation confirms that the GasLog vessel is equipped with a permanently installed machinery health monitoring (MHM) system capable of continuously assessing onboard machinery, detecting anomalies and identifying potential failures before they occur.

The project was developed in collaboration with Propulsion Analytics, whose digital technology underpins the vessel’s monitoring capabilities.

“This achievement represents a pioneering step in the application of smart technology and advanced analytics to gas carrier operations,” said Patrick Ryan, ABS senior vice president and chief technology officer.

“By meeting ABS requirements for the SMART (MHM) notation, GasLog is demonstrating that machinery health monitoring at this level can deliver meaningful operational benefits including enhanced predictive maintenance capability and improved machinery reliability.”

GasLog said the award represents the near completion of a fleetwide transition to SMART (MHM) notation under its Lifecycle Maintenance Strategy.

Asset integrity manager Lampros Nikolopoulos said the company’s class-approved engine condition-based maintenance programme integrates advanced thermodynamic digital twins with high-frequency vessel data, alongside lubrication, vibration, chemical analysis and planned maintenance information.

“Apart from intelligent interventions on engine components, the scheme optimizes overhaul intervals, total cost of ownership, operational flexibility and fleet CO₂e performance for all engines of our fleet,” he said.

Propulsion Analytics chief executive Panos Kyrtatos described the recognition as the culmination of four years of collaboration.

“Together, we have developed and deployed the DiEM platform. The result is earlier detection of engine degradation, reduced unnecessary maintenance and measurable savings in spare parts and service costs, while significantly improving machinery reliability and performance,” he said.

The SMART (MHM) notation forms part of the wider ABS smart functions framework, recognising vessels that employ advanced digital systems to improve maintenance, reliability and operational efficiency.
