GE to supply power and propulsion package for US NSMV newbuildings

The scope of the power and propulsion package includes the integration of the diesel engines, generators, switchboards, transformers, main propulsion drives, propulsion motors, and auxiliary support systems.

The Motorship previously reported that the vessels’ diesel-electric power and propulsion system was based on four main gensets installed in dual engine rooms. GE noted that Cummins Inc. would supply Wabtec’s latest 16V250 Series diesel engines as part of the contract. The engines meet the EPA’s Tier 4 emission standards without using urea-based after-treatments.

The R&D, engineering, and manufacturing of GE’s Power Conversion equipment for the two NSMVs will be located out of GE’s facility in Pennsylvania.

The two National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMV) are being built at Philly Shipyard in Pennsylvania, USA, for the US Maritime Administration (MARAD). The vessels are scheduled to enter service in 2023 and 2024, when they will replace current training ships at the State Maritime Academies.

MARAD plans to contract for three further NSMVs. The power systems contracts for the series of five vessels are estimated at more than $100 million.

The 160-metre long ships will accommodate up to 600 cadets and instructors and provide comprehensive, instructional spaces and a full training bridge. The vessels have roll-on/roll-off (RORO) capabilities and container storage capacity as well as a helicopter landing pad, enabling them to support humanitarian aid or disaster relief if needed.
