Germans roll out second for Scandlines

The ship was rolled 400m out of the shipbuilding hall at the former Volkswerft on a lift before being lowered into the water and moved to the outfitting quay. P+S has already announced it will be named on 3 May jointly with sister Berlin, whose naming had originally been planned for 9 March but was postponed at short notice for two months.

P+S told The Motorship at the time that the postponement was so that “a comprehensive presentation” could be made of both ships at once and dismissed local media reports it had to do with construction problems at the busy yard.

Between them Copenhagen and Berlin will double Scandlines capacity on the popular Rostock-Gedser Baltic ferry run from this summer. They each carry 480 cars or 96 trucks and up to 1,500 passengers and are driven by five MaK 9 M 32 C main engines with CAT Common Rail, providing up to 20.5 knots.

The P+S Group is currently one of the best-booked shipyards in Germany with orders for specialised tonnage worth over €1bn in hand. Repair is also still part of the scene. AlongsideCopenhagen on roll out (see photo) were the 34m naval tug Vogelsand and the 32.1m ferry Vitte both in for repair and maintenance.
