Heavy-duty offshore engine order

One of each ship’s two medium-speed MAN 8L27/38 workhorses

The engines are to be installed in a standard twin-screw configuration, driving two ducted CP propellers on each ship. Bollard pull is estimated at 90t. The engines for the first and second vessels will be shipped from Denmark in weeks 18 and 22 of 2012.

MAN Diesel & Turbo says that the L27/38 medium-speed propulsion engine has proved a popular workhorse for heavy-duty applications like offshore supply and service vessels, anchor handlers, tugs and large workboats. It can be sued with conventional CP and FP propellers, azimuth propellers, Z-drives, thrusters and cyclic propellers such as Voith Schneider units The company says the engine features robustly design, high levels of reliability and durability with good performance over the entire load range, optimised for high-torque layout, and dynamic behaviour, with good acceleration, invisible smoke from idling to full load, low fuel oil consumption and low NOx emissions.

The engine is designed for ease of maintenance, with a modular ‘pipeless’ design. The front-end box has all auxiliary system components mounted for easy access and service. An integrated closed system circuit for lube oil includes an engine driven pump, automatic filter, cooler and thermostatic valves.
