HHI builds first underwater LNG tanks

The world’s largest shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea has built the world’s first underwater LNG tanks. Each measures 155 metres in length and weighs 4,800 tones. The order was placed last year by ExxonMobil, and the tanks can store up to 260,000 cubic meters of LNG.

Hyundai declined to mention their cost. The two tanks will be deployed in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of northern Italy to enter into use in 2008. Hyundai says the tanks can withstand temperatures of -162 degrees Celsius. The tanks will be delivered in pieces to Spain, where they will be assembled.
