‘MS Sonja’, powered by Ultrajet

MS Sonja is powered by a single Sisu 84CTIM 410 bhp diesel engine driving an UltraJet 305 HT (high thrust) waterjet at 2100 rpm via a ZF286 gearbox. This propulsion system is claimed to offer high manoeuvrability, low draught and a reduction in the chances of snagging lines when operating around salmon farms. MS Sonja has a maximum speed of around 28 knots, with is said to drop by less than 1 knot with more than 500 kg cargo on deck.

The boat is designed for aquaculture applications, and is equipped with a 2.3 tonne Palfinger crane and a 1,000 kg capstan winch for salmon harvesting. Operator Nordlaks Oppdrett has a sister ship Hadsel, delivered in 2010, and has ordered two more boats for 2011 delivery. The yard says it has a total of five vessels of this type on order.
