India signs Scorpene deal

India and France have signed a $3.5 billion contract for construction of six Scorpene submarines in India. The Indian Ministry of Defence said in a statement that the submarines will be built at state-owned Mazagon Docks, Mumbai. The first submarine will be ready for service by 2012, and the remainder will be delivered over the following five years, at one per year.
