Japan : TESS design proves popular

Tsuneishi Shipyard in Japan has won a further order – this time from Taiwanese interests – for its innovative TESS 52 handymax bulk carrier. The Japanese yard, which recently launched the 100th ship in the TESS (Tsuneishi Economical Standard Ship) series, Jawa Power for Orchid Seaways Pte Ltd on Singapore, won the order for the TESS 52 from First Steamship of Taiwan.

The TESS 52 is the successor to the TESS 40 and TESS 45 Handymax designs, the Jawa Power being the latest example of the TESS 45. It is a 52,000 dwt design in which deadweight and capacity have been significantly increased compared with the TESS 45. At 67,500m3 the TESS 52 is 18 per cent larger than the TESS 45.

The design is length-limited to 190m overall to enable it to work into smaller ports and harbours, and like the TESS 45 is driven by a Mitsui-MAN B&W 6S50MC main engine, and has a service speed of 14.5 knot.
