Japan to research hybrid propulsion
Japan’s Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES), in conjunction with Osaka University, will soon be undertaking research on a hybrid propulsion system which combines a battery unit with a diesel engine.
The project also aims to reinforce the company’s knowledge on electrical systems and promote recruitment as a heavy industries manufacturer of ships and machines. Under the deal, a joint research course will be established with Osaka University beginning October this year toward the advancement of research on ship propulsion systems that incorporate battery units (battery or capacitor).
The research will be undertaken until March 2013 with researchers in electrical, metal and ship systems at the university taking part in the project together with staff from MES.
Separate from the company-wide research and development project being promoted by the yard’s ship division and other segments toward the development of ships aimed at cutting CO2 emissions by 30%, the above project will perform basic research.
It is possible that there will be a demand for the 50-80% reduction in CO2 in the future and this is just not feasible with the current propulsion systems available.
MES has hammered out new research themes for the purpose of transforming the accessory batteries and control equipment to the practical size and price with the diesel engine deemed to be the most efficient serving as the main subject of the research.
