Jotun unveils new hull monitoring programme

HullKeeper is based on Jotun’s fouling risk algorithm which takes data from different sources to make fouling control more predictable. The four-part programme combines digital capabilities, ROV inspections and analytical and technical expertise. Operators can choose the complete package or just those elements they need.

According to Stein Kjølberg, Jotun’s global category director of hull performance, more ship operators have recognised that proactive fouling control is key to managing increasingly strict regulations, rising fuel costs and environmental performance. “HullKeeper extends the range of our services, helping operators make well-informed and proactive decisions to improve hull efficiency as they push for optimal performance, efficiency and regulatory compliance,” he said.

Increased fuel consumption as a result of biofouling accounts for about 9% of the 919 million tonnes of CO2 and 21 million tonnes of other greenhouse gases emitted by shipping annually.

Jotun’s global digital & data director, Andreas Krapp, PhD, said that controlling the condition of a ship’s hull is the key to lowering fuel consumption and emissions. “Ship operators that use HullKeeper will be able to identify potential problems long before fouling impacts vessel performance, allowing them to make better decisions, faster,” he said.
