K98 starts to make mark
The first engine tested was one of ten seven-cylinder 98cm bore units, and will power a 4,800 TEU container ship for Hapag-Lloyd. MAN B&W says that the tests had been particularly successful, as had the component inspection.
Also on order are five 10K98MC-C and the five 12K98MC-C engines. The 12-cylinder (68,520 kW/93,120 bhp) engines are for Hyundai Merchant Marine and will power a series of containerships with outline specification of 6,400 TEU and a service speed of 26.4 knots.
With the first engine built, MAN B&W has revised the weight of the 98cm bore ranges, with some of the MC-C engines up to 150t lighter than the original estimates.
