Keel laid for Western Ferries vessel

The keel laying ceremony marked the official start of construction of two new vessels for the operator.

At the ceremony, Western Ferries revealed that the first completed vessel will be named Sound of Seil, in keeping with the company’s tradition of naming its ferries after Scottish Sounds.

Alistair Ross, chairman, Western Ferries, said: “These vessels represent a major investment in our service and will enhance the travelling experience for our passengers. The new ferries will be bigger, faster, more efficient and more comfortable than the vessels they are replacing.”

He added: “Capacity will be increasing by 20% to facilitate the expected growth in vehicle numbers. In terms of the environment, they will be at the cutting edge of the latest engine technology, thereby reducing fuel usage and emissions.”

Work on the second vessel, which is to be named Sound of Soay, is due to start in November.

The ferries will be operated on the service between Dunoon and Gourock and are expected to be delivered in summer 2013.
