Kvaerner Philadelphia ready to christen ship number two
Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard (KPS) will be christening its second newbuilding later this week. The boxship is being built for Matson Navigation and will be named Maunawili, which means ?winding mountain?. Last summer, KPS delivered the first container ship in the series, Manukai, which is operating on the company?s route between Hawaii and Los Angeles.
The shipyard is operating part of the site of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, where the US Navy built and maintained ships for nearly two centuries until it was closed in 1996. Kvaerner is working on a third container ship in the series and shipyard officials hope that soon they will be completing two ships a year.
