Paper carrier beats 2g/kWh NOx limit
Fitting Siemens SINOx catalysts has enabled the paper carrier
Cellus
to be certified at below the 2 g/kWh limit for maximum reductions on Swedish port and fairway dues. Both the MaK 8M32 main engine, burning 1 per cent sulphur HFO, and the MDO powered MAN B&W 6L16/24 auxiliary engine have SCRs fitted but not the Volvo TAMD122AKC emergency genset engine.
Germanischer Lloyd certified the NOx levels at 75 per cent load as 0.6 g/kWh for the MaK engine, 0.2 g/kWh for the 16/24, and 14.6 g/kWh for the genset. Using Sweden`s weighting system this gave an overall NOx level for the vessel of 1.3 g/kWh.
The SCRs costs around DM400,000 ($240,000) and ready diluted urea costs around DM0.25/lit. This means the cost of reducing NOx from the main engine and auxiliary engines is DM441 ($266) per day.
