Large Chinese order for azimuth propulsors

Steerprop says that this sale is in addition to the four ship sets of propulsors contacted earlier this year to Sinopacific. Deliveries are scheduled for 2011 and 2012. Each of the 16 AHTS ships will be equipped with three Steerprop azimuth propulsors, which will serve as main propulsion. The ships will serve with the fleet of Bourbon of France, which operates globally on various offshore industry support tasks.

Steerprop adds that this contract is a continuation its long working relationship with Sinopacific, and including this order Steerprop azimuth propulsors have been ordered for around 100 ships. Many of these ships are already in service and, according to Steerprop, have acquired a reputation for manoeuvrability, efficiency and reliability among crews and operators. The vessel design and the efficiency of the ducted propellers contribute to the ships’ ecological friendliness, because they consume less energy and hence produce fewer emissions.

According to Steerprop MD Jarmo Savikurki, this contract is one of the most important sales in the company’s history. It will use up to 30% of the company’s capacity and represent work up to 70 man years for both Steerprop and its sub-contractors. Moreover, it signifies a revival in the shipbuilding industry from the financial crisis of 2008.
