Lockheed Martin delivers first LNG tank

It has been transported to the Gulf Coast Shipyard in Gulfport, where it will be integrated with the Wärtsilä LNG propulsion system. The tank has been built by Lockheed Martin’s NASA Michoud Assembly Facility, from over 100,000kg of US steel, under contract to Wärtsilä.

Lockheed Martin says this is the first in a series of cryogenic tanks it is producing for both shipboard applications and land-based storage, based on the company’s technology and experience from building space shuttle external tanks for NASA. As the marine LNG market grows, Lockheed Martin expects interest for cryogenic tanks to increase.
