Two-stroke engine options may be limited to the ranges of three manufacturers, but as the power matrix for all engines over 800mm bore opposite partially demonstrates, there is still a multiple of choices – both of models and engine speed ? in virtually every power bracket between 2,560 and 80,080kW that a ship may require.

At the top-end, where the power requirement to achieve designated performance characteristics reaches about 60,000kW and up, the choice is limited to the largest bore engines in the MAN B&W and Sulzer (Wärtsilä) ranges. But it is only the very largest containerships that currently require the kind of performance these engines deliver. For the more prevalent ship types the choice is much greater.

Take, for example, a slightly smaller containership for which it has been calculated that the power needed to transport the cargo at the required speed is 45,000kW and the necessary engine speed is 95 rev/min and above. Even at this high power demand, the choice is from five models ? MAN B&W?s K90MC-C and K98MC-C, Mitsubishi?s UEC85LSC and Wärtsilä?s RTA84C and RTA96C can all be configured to deliver 45,000kW. As power demand decreases the choice becomes even greater.

In these environmentally-conscious days another factor is starting to determine operators? engine choice – emissions. This and a belief that there are more efficient ways to control certain engine functions than hydraulics and mechanics has led to the introduction of the first electronically controlled engines. In future the options for two-stroke engines will grow as manufacturers, principally MAN B&W and Wärtsilä, extend their electronic engine ranges (ME and RT-flex).

This year we are presenting the manufacturers two-stroke engine data in a consolidated format that lists all models currently available in order of ascending bore size. This is to help you easily pick out first those models that can deliver the required output and second select from these those models that have the necessary engine speed, without having to refer back to each manufacturer?s individual product literature.
