WinGD unveils dual-fuel NH3/LPG engine
This ‘pre-fit’ solution, called X-DF-P, targets vessels currently under construction to meet the anticipated growth in ammonia trade while maintaining the capability to transport LPG.
“This development highlights our continuous innovation in support of smarter sustainable ship power solutions,” said WinGD vice president, R&D Sebastian Hensel.
Set for initial engine deliveries in 2027, the X-DF-P will cater to operators assessing the balance between LPG and ammonia trades. Designed primarily for ammonia, the engine will provide reliable and efficient operation on LPG, with simple modifications allowing a future transition to ammonia.
The global ammonia trade is projected to expand significantly enabling hydrogen transport from renewable energy sites to demand centres worldwide.
“The X-DF-P offers a valuable intermediate step for gas carrier operators who are keen to participate in the emerging ammonia trade but are uncertain about the timing and impact on vessel engines and fuels,” continued Hensel.
WinGD already has multiple orders for its X-DF-A engines from operators looking to build multi-gas carriers and very large ammonia carriers.
The engines are being developed in sizes commonly used for trade vessels, including 52- and 62-bore, with adjustable injection systems compatible with both fuels.
