LR checklist helps reduce PSC detention risk

Lloyd?s Register (LR) has published a pocket checklist to help shipowners comply with international regulations. Entitled ?Reducing the risk of port state control detentions?, the checklist has been compiled following a thorough analysis of LR?s port state control (PSC) database and focuses on the deficiencies that resulted in PSC detentions. Conveniently organised by distinct ship area, the checklist identifies the top 50 most common causes of ship detention.

“More than 70% of the owners of LR classed ships have never experienced detention, but it is important for all owners to ensure that they comply continually with international regulations,” says Abhay Shah, Senior Business Support Specialist for LR. “The checklist is designed to supplement owners? operational procedures and will help to ensure compliance during routine PSC inspections. By ensuring that the items listed comply with requirements, owners will be able to significantly reduce the likelihood of a detention.”

The checklist forms part of LR?s ongoing drive to help improve the quality and performance of ships in operation and should be used in conjunction with its in-depth PSC ?Maintenance Guide Checklist?.
