Maersk cutting emission levels on newbuildings

A P Moller-Maersk will cut the emission levels on a new series of container ships presently under construction at the Korean shipyard Daewoo Heavy Industries. The series of 16 ships will be optimised in energy consumption through a number of measures. There will be a change of the bow construction, a bigger propeller and enlarging of the take-home power from an exhaust boiler.

These measures will cut around 22% of the CO2 emissions or totally around 550,000 tonnes for the whole series of ships. The vessels will be delivered from 2010 and onward for the Maersk Line service on the South America?Europe run (7,450 TEUs and 300 metres long). Although the ships will cost an extra 15% to build, they will cut around $50 million of the bunker costs.

A P Moller-Maersk will take the development a step further on the next series of container ships from Daewoo. The series consists of 22 units for later delivery, and they will be even more optimised concerning energy consumption and emissions.
