Major milestone for AkzoNobel carbon credits

This major milestone means that all of the requirements have been met to prove that emission savings have been achieved using AkzoNobel’s Intersleek technology, the industry’s first biocide-free, slime release coating featuring new patented fluoropolymer technology.

Developed in conjunction with The Gold Standard Foundation and the FReMCo Group, the methodology is the first of its kind and allows ships to generate carbon credits, thus income, for the CO2 emission reductions they achieve.

“In a traditionally conservative industry with tight margins, ship owners and operators need sound conviction of the credibility of new financial mechanisms before investing,” said Marion Verles, CEO at The Gold Standard Foundation.

The Gold Standard approved methodology is based on ship data received from ships which is then translated into greenhouse gas emission savings. A baseline emission level is determined
for the vessel prior to the application of Intersleek. The same data source is then used to
determine the emission savings after the application of Intersleek, therefore generating carbon credits, and therefore income.

Intersleek1100SR specifically influences the settlement and adhesion of organisms that make up slime. As a result, all vessels can benefit from reduced drag, improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions without the use of biocides.

“The issue of the first carbon credits will demonstrate the environmental and economic benefits of this scheme and hopefully accelerate uptake, thus supporting widespread adoption of more sustainable and eco efficient practices in the industry,” added Ms Verles.

The issuance of the first carbon credits accrued through the scheme is expected any day. AkzoNobel says it expects over 130,000 Intersleek Gold Standard Carbon Credits to be issued during October 2015.

AkzoNobel’s Intersleek marine coatings and its carbon credits methodology are to feature in a new in depth news programme
