MAN buys Alstom Engines

German engineering conglomerate MAN (parent company of MAN B&W) has bought Alstom Engines which comprises the UK-based manufacturers Ruston, Paxman and Mirrlees Blackstone. In general the UK-produced range fits well between the small marine engines made by MAN Nutzfahrzeugh and the larger units from MAN B&W.

However, overlaps occur with Mirrlees Blackstone?s 40 and 43cm bore ranges and product from Augsberg and Pielstick. While rationalisation will be required, the UK brand?s penetration of the fast ferry, power generating, and rail traction market should see these engines in production for some time.

n Alstom Leroux Naval has ordered five 8.1MW/1,050 rev/min Pielstick 20 PA6B STC engines to power two fast ferries. Three engines will propel a Corsaire 10000 at 35 knots, while the other two will be used in conjunction with twin 25MW (33,512 bhp) gas turbines allowing a Corsaire 14000 to reach 40 knots.
