MAN ME-GI engines for LNG carriers
The engines are based on MAN’s new ultra-long-stroke, G-type concept which the company says delivers even higher, overall propulsion plant efficiency.
Research indicated that the engine delivers significant reductions in CO2, NOx and SOx emissions. Compared to a modern DFDE propulsion solution, MAN says its ME-GI engine delivers fuel savings of more than 30 tonnes of gas per day when operating at a normal ship speed of 15 to 17 knots.
The engine gives shipowners and operators the option of using either HFO or gas. MAN is currently developing an ME-LGI counterpart that uses LPG and methanol.
To date, MAN has received orders for 42 dual-fuel units and says it sees significant opportunities arising for gas-fuelled tonnage as fuel prices rise and modern exhaust-emission limits are tightened.
