Mar-In Controls, manufacturer of feeder booster modules and viscosity control systems, has two of its systems aboard each of Royal Caribbean’s Project Eagle cruise ships, one for each engine room. Mar-In says its modules supply a stable inlet pressure and can work out cheaper, as it specifies feeder pump capacities roughly 25 per cent above the requirement, not two or three times like some of its competitors.

The reason is the use of a pneumatic control system with proportional and integral actions which controls a pneumatic control valve with a turn down ratio of 1:25. Mar-In says its competitors use mechanically operated pressure control valves with a usable turn down ratio of 1:2, if large pressure variations are to be avoided, meaning that the volumes and pump capacities have to be larger.

Mar-In Controls’ viscosity measurement uses a Teflon coated capillary tube which prevents the fuel oil deposits forming on the inside of the tube wall and causing erroneous readings. This ensures the precision and reliability of the viscosity control system, it says.
