MDL to launch new frigate
The third frigate of Shivalik Class incorporating stealth features, built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) will be launched here on May 27. The two previous frigates of Shivalik Class, also built by MDL, are in an advanced stage of outfitting and would be entering into service from 2007.
The frigates are named after the mountain ranges of the Indian sub-continent. The first ship of the Class, ‘Shivalik’, was launched in April 2003, and the second ‘Satpura’ in June 2004. These multi-purpose frigates are of 4,900 tonne displacement and are 142.5 m in length, 16.90 m in breadth and are capable of speed in excess of 30 knots.
Several modifications have been incorporated in the third frigate based on the experience gained in the earlier two units. The construction of Project-17 ships was a landmark in indigenous efforts in warship design with the close cooperation between Indian Navy and MDL. The weapon fit is a mixture of Indian, western and Russian systems and the ships will be fitted with both air defence and anti-submarine warfare capabilities and will carry two advanced helicopters on board.
MDL are also building three destroyers.
