MLC checklist backed by mobile app
The pocket checklist and supporting app will support masters, officers and managers in preparing for inspections against the requirements of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006, helping ship operators comply with the convention’s requirements and reduce the risk of port state control detentions.
MLC was introduced by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to help ensure that all seafarers, regardless of their nationality and the flag of the ships they work on, can enjoy decent working and living conditions. The convention will enter into force in August 2013.
The hardcopy checklist and digital app both serve as interactive tools that enables ships’ crews and their managers to view the requirements of the ILO MLC and check off required activities as they are completed. The app is free and available for iPhone, iPad, Android devices, Windows phone and BlackBerry. The UK P&I Club is managed by Thomas Miller.
The App will be available from the end of next week. Our staff writer Stevie Knight attended the launch, and will be providing an analysis of why this move is necessary, and the implications for Port State Control and MLC implementation in The Motorship printed magazine.
