MOL completes BWTS installation

JFE Engineering's BWTS was installed on the 'Libra Trader'

The company announced its plans to install JFE Engineering Corporation’s system to its existing VLCC in January 2013, which paves the way for achieving its environmental strategic targets, ahead of IMO rulings.

In the case of an oil tanker, the majority of the ballast water treatment system needs to be installed in its small, narrow pump room, requiring a high level of safety and process management.

The system utilises filters, two chemical agents, and Venturi tubes. When the ballast water is discharged, TG Environmentalguard is injected into the ballast water containing TRO. This neutralises and detoxifies the ballast water which is then discharged safely from the ship.

The 333m Libra Trader has returned to service and the ballast water treatment system will be tested an adjusted during operation.

MOL is the first Japanese company to install a BWTS for an existing VLCC.
