MOL launches net-zero emissions programme

The Blue Action Net-Zero Alliance programme focuses on offering and enhancing low-emission marine transportation using alternative fuels, developed through collaboration with marine transportation stakeholders.

In February 2024, MOL became the first Asia-Pacific shipping company to issue environmental attributes certificates (EACs) for low-emission voyages which use alternative fuels.

These certificates, tradable on a platform developed with Dutch startup 123Carbon, allow MOL to offer a transparent and traceable system from low-emission voyages to the issuance and allocation of EACs to customers.

MOL has already executed transactions for these EACs with major NVOCCs, including Nippon Express Holdings, C.H. Robinson Worldwide, and MOL Logistics Co.

The EACs contain detailed environmental data, including GHG emission reductions in units of t-CO2e, which can be incorporated by shippers and NVOCCs into their sustainability reports.

The certificates are traded under a book-and-claim model, enabling flexible trading in line with customers’ Scope 3 reduction targets and budget. Proceeds from EAC sales will be reinvested to procure alternative fuels, further reducing the company’s reliance on fossil fuels.

This initiative is a key part of MOL’s Environmental Vision 2.2 and BLUE ACTION 2035 corporate management plan, which detail the company’s commitment to achieving sustainability goals and driving innovation in the marine transport sector.
