Most powerful MAN engine enters service

The new vessel for Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), and her MAN B&W 11G95ME-C9.5 two-stroke engine, sailed the short voyage to Busan after delivery from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).

The engine, delivered from MAN licensee Doosan Engine in October last year, is the first of six ordered by MSC. Two vessels under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries will begin sea trials this month and a sister vessel to ‘MSC Jade’ will also start trials shortly.

Since August 2103, 68 MAN B&W G95 engines, in eight- to eleven-cylinder configurations, have been ordered for the large container capacity market (9,000-21,000 teu).

Ole Grøne, senior vice president low-speed sales and promotions, MAN Diesel & Turbo, said: “We attribute the G95’s popularity in this segment to its ability to provide sufficient power for such vessels to reliably achieve their desired operating speed. The G95’s rpm ensures that a propeller of optimal size can be employed, in turn delivering a low fuel-oil consumption for an optimal fuel economy.”

The G95ME-C9, with a bore of 950mm and a stroke of 3,460mm, provides 6,870kW/cylinder at 80rpm and 21 BMEP (in L1). It was introduced as a supplement to the successful S90ME-C9/10 engine types.

The ‘MSC Jade’ also features four MAN L32/40 auxiliary engines (two 8L32/40 and two 9L32/40 units), each with a single MAN NR34/S turbocharger.
