NASSCO on target for first BP tanker

Steel and Shipbuilding (NASSCO), in San Diego, is putting the finishing touches on the first of four double-hull oil tankers for BP Oil Shipping. The newbuildings have a length of 290 metres, a beam of 50.5 metres and are capable of carrying 1.3 million barrels of oil. The Alaska-class tankers will be used in oil deliveries from Alaska to US West Coast ports, including BP refineries in Los Angeles and Cherry Point. The four ships are scheduled to be delivered between now and the end of 2006.
