New Handymax from Oshima

A new ultra Handymax bulk carrier design has been developed by the Japanese shipbuilder Oshima featuring a Panamax beam and draught but maintaining a Handymax length. The 60,000dwt design has a length of 190m, a beam of 32.26m, a draught of 13.04m and five holds with a total cargo capacity of 74,600m3. For more efficient cargo handling, each hold will have a 18.6m-wide hatch openings and four sets of 30 tonne, 26m reach, deck cranes. The single hull will have a double hull configuration at number 1 and 5 hold although there is an option to have a complete double hull.

The new ultra 60 design has the same overall length and beam of the previous 54,600dwt Oshima Handymax bulker design which offers a cargo capacity of 67,900 m3 on a draught of 12.39m.

Powered by one MAN B&W 6S50MC-C two-stroke diesel engine, the ultra will have a speed of 14.5kt. To date, no orders have been placed since there are no newbuilding slots available at Oshima until the end of 2008.
