New LNG containership concept

The STREAM development concept is for a 4,200 teu and a wide bodied 5,000 teu fully cellular, open top, LNG fuelled container vessel. The vessel is subdivided into six double 40 foot holds, with the forward hold covered to allow carriage of dangerous goods, whilst the remainder is open topped.

The vessel’s focus is on being both environmentally friendly and economical to operate.

The design was developed by Germany’s IPP Ingenieur Partner Pool with the container stowing concept developed by experts from both Cargotec and TECHNOLOG, part of the German engineering alliance.

Ari Viitanen, dry cargo sales director, Cargotec, said: “There is far more to this concept than a change of fuel. It places great emphasis on optimising the efficient use of the vessel through well designed cargo stowage and handling systems.”

The STREAM 4200 LNG is designed to negotiate the existing Panama Canal locks and also the modified Kiel Canal.

Having been approved by Germanischer Lloyd, the design is being marketed by TECHNOLOG and patent rights have been applied for.
