New ship repair yard in Subic

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has inked a contract with Subic Drydock Corp for the construction of a ship repair facility which involves bringing back a former US naval base?s floating dry-dock. The $5 million project could employ some 200 skilled and semi-skilled workers.

The return of the floating dry-dock would mean job opportunities for people in the nearby area, especially those who were trained and used to be employed with the Ship Repair Facility (SRF) at the US Naval Base. The AFDM-5 dry-dock used to handle the repairs of the US Navy ships that were docked in Subic. After the Philippines Senate rejected the extension of the Philippines-US military bases agreement in the 80s, the drydock was towed to Guam and later to Japan.
