The capesize, 146,019 dwt Golden Union bulk carrier Cape Providence has undergone permanent repairs at Nantong Ocean Ship Engineering.

The 1987-built bulker, laden with ore, was steaming across the Indian Ocean almost 2,000 miles from the nearest major land mass when frames collapsed on the starboard side of hold no 3 and shell plating started to peel away. Salvage experts Tsavliris were engaged, and the vessel was towed to Cocos Island where temporary repairs were carried out.

The ship was then escorted to China for discharge and permanent repairs. Approximately 80t of steel was fitted to make good the damage, and the vessel also underwent intermediate survey and upgrading work. The job was completed mid January.
