Nuclear waste carrier delivered

The first South Korea-built nuclear waste container carrier has been completed. Dae Sun Shipbuilding & Engineering in South Korea has delivered the country’s first pure nuclear waste container carrier to Korea Radioactive Waste Management Corporation (KRMC).

The 2,600 DWT ship, named HJ Cheongjeongnuri, has a length of 78.6m, breadth of 15.8m and a cruising speed of 12 knots. The newbuilding will be commissioned in the second half of this year to ship up to 1,000 drums of low/medium-level radioactive waste at a time. The vessel satisfies the international standards set by IMO, etc. as well as domestic ships safety rules.

Hanjin Shipping and JK ENG will jointly operate the ship and the terms of operation for the ship are much stricter than those for ordinary vessels. KRMC said, “The double-hull ship is fitted with various safety equipment such as double engines, collision prevention radar, automatic ship recognition device, etc.”
