P&I CLUB HOSTS INDIAN LOSS PREVENTION SEMINAR

D. T. Joseph, shipping secretary of the Indian government, and P. K. Srivastava, chairman and managing director of the Shipping Corporation of India – owner of almost 40% of India’s shipping tonnage, both addressed a major Indian seminar on maritime loss prevention in Mumbai earlier this week. The event was organised on behalf of the Nautical Institute’s India (West) branch by North of England P&I club.

The 50 million GT club now insures a significant part of the Indian fleet with vessels from several major Indian shipping businesses.

Over 220 delegates attended the one-day event at the Taj Mahal Hotel. It was coordinated by Captain Savraj Mehta, who was formerly one of the Indian shipping industry’s youngest masters and is now a board member of the North of England P&I club’s management company, North Insurance Management Ltd.

The seminar focused on the potentially crippling financial consequences of shipboard accidents and miss-management in today’s highly regulated shipping environment through a fictitious case study entitled ‘The eventful voyage of the MV Bon Voyage’. Methods for preventing or minimising such losses were then discussed, with contributions from local speakers culminating in a panel debate.
