Peru inches BWM Convention closer

The announcement was made by the Peruvian delegation to the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee, which is meeting this week. The delegate confirmed the passing of the bill for ratification through Peru’s parliament, and subsequently announced in the country’s official gazette on March 13.

Last month the ratifications of Belgium and Fiji took the convention to 34.82% of global tonnage (represented by ratified parties), with 35% required to trigger entry into force. That figure may have changed now that the numbers are being recalibrated on a monthly basis.

Discussion about the BWM Convention are continuing into the second morning of the MEPC meeting at the IMO headquarters in London.
