Philly yard starts tanker number two

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard has begun production on the second of ten vessels in the 46,000 dwt product tanker build program announced last spring. Steel cutting for the ship, the sixth built by the yard since its opening five years ago, begins just weeks after keel laying for the first tanker in the series. The second vessel is scheduled to be completed in 2007.

Upon completion, the tankers will be owned by American Shipping Corporation, a subsidiary of Aker American Shipping. With two tankers and one container vessel currently under construction, Aker Philadelphia continues to demonstrate the improved processes and efficiencies with which it operates. The yard is the shipbuilding subsidiary of newly-established Aker American Shipping.
