Powering to new heights
MAN B&W has orders for 20 of its K98 engines for container ship propulsion, half of which are 12-cylinder units – which at 68.6MW (93,270 bhp) will be the world?s most powerful diesel. Hyundai Merchant Marine and Costamare have both ordered five 12-cylinder engines for 6,400TEU and 6,200TEU vessels respectively. Costamare has also ordered three seven-cylinder versions for 4,800TEU vessels.
Seven-cylinder versions will also power Hapag-Lloyd?s four 4,800TEU vessels and a trio of similar vessels for Norddeutsche Vermogen. All the engines and ships will be built by Hyundai.
