The Polish classification society Polski Rejestr Statków (PRS) has been granted European Community limited recognition, following the publication of European Commission (EC) Decision 2006/660/EC on 29 September 2006.

Limited recognition applies to a classification society that satisfies all the requirements of amended EU Directive 94/57/EC, covering ship inspection and survey organisations, except for tonnage requirements and number of ships in class. The application for recognition was submitted by the Polish Authorities on Poland?s accession to the EU and was followed by letters from the Czech, Cyprus, Malta, Lithuania and Slovak authorities requesting the Commission to grant Community recognition to PRS pursuant to Article 4(2) of Directive 94/57/EC.

Only Member States can request EU recognition of a classification society. EU Directive 94/57 requires that every EU recognised classification society should be assessed every two years. PRS is determined to fully comply with top European quality standards for class societies.
