Remontowa in RoRo LNG conversion

The Spirit of Vancouver Island entered Remontowa in October 2018 and is sister ship to the Spirit of British Columbia and the second Spirit class ferry to have her propulsion system converted at the yard to use LNG.

The full modernisation and machinery conversion includes four new dual-fuel Wärtsilä 8L34DF engines and a cryogenic tank. The engine room is dual fuel, adapted to be fed both with low-sulphur diesel oil and LNG. Other work included the renewal of navigation and propulsion equipment as well as a refresh of the passenger areas.

In a letter signed by Mark Collins, president and chief executive and Mark Wilson, vice-president of strategy and community engagement, BC Ferries congratulated Piotr Soyka, the co-owner and chairman of Remontowa Holding, for the on-schedule delivery.

They expressed their gratitude for “stepping up to the challenges and making the necessary adjustments to make the Spirit of British Columbia and the Spirit of Vancouver Island a successful MLU programme.”

Following her upgrade she began her voyage across the Atlantic, the Panama Canal and a passage along the west coast of North America to Richmond in Canada.
