Repair alliance pays off

Created at the start of 2013, the alliance groups Rickmers Lloyd and Motorenwerke Bremerhaven (MWB) – together making up GDD – and adjacent LWB. Together they offer six dry and floating docks.

LWB MD Rüdiger Pallentin told The Motorship “cross-company utilisation” meant workforces complemented each other. That had “a positive effect” on the jobs of about 600 employees. The alliance also ensured all docks were well utilised, he added.

GDD head Uwe Beck echoed Mr Pallentin’s comments. He told The Motorship it had an “exciting, successful and promising year”. He added “the future looks positive and we want to build on our own strengths as well as upon the synergies released by the new shipyard alliance”.

One of many good examples of the flexible new inter-yard co-operation was the 11,089dwt ro-ro ship Suecia Seaways. A customer of GDD, she docked recently in LWB’s Floating Dock III because it had capacity available. She underwent boiler repairs and overhaul as well as seacock, pipe and other steel works.
