RMC builds tailor-made hall for Finnish navy

RMC is building four multipurpose corvettes which, for security reasons, will be constructed in a multipurpose hall optimised for building government vessels. With work starting in November, the hall is expected to be ready next year with construction of the corvettes moved here in 2023.

Jyrki Heinimaa, chief executive and president of RMC, said the agreement was an important step in the joint effort with the Finnish Defence Forces. “We have already made investments in welding technology to achieve the needed measurement accuracy for the corvettes’ steel work. The multipurpose construction hall is an especially important investment for us because it will allow us to proceed with the construction of the vessels,” he said.

Current plans put the hall at 180 metres long, 40 metres wide and 30 metres long. Following completion of the corvettes it will be redeployed for the construction of sections for car and passenger ferries.

The contracting parties are Finnish constructive company SRV and a newly formed real estate company owned by RMC and the City of Rauma. Estimated to cost around €26 million, the project will be carried out through a cooperative project management model. SRV’s share of the cost will be approximately €19 million.
