RT-flex gets first order

Wartsila NSD has secured its first order for a Sulzer RT-flex ?intelligent? engine from Hyundai Mipo. The 6RT-flex58T-B will be built at Hyundai, with the RT-flex parts being delivered directly from Wartsila NSD.

Producing 12,750kW (17,340 bhp) at 105 rev/min, the engine is basically the traditional low-speed unit but without a camshaft. In its place twin pumps (from the ZA40) deliver fuel at up to 1,000 bar to the common rail system, while injection is computer controlled via solenoid valves.

The normal hydraulic exhaust valve operation is retained, but with computer control – making the camshaft redundant. Mapping the engine?s speed/load range into the computer allows optimisation throughout the operating range, rather than just a single point as with the mechanical system.

Shipowner Gypsum Transportation selected the engine for its handymax self-unloading bulk carrier because of its lower exhaust emissions and superior efficiency at non-optimised speeds. The Bermuda-based owner operates vessels between Nova Scotia and the US east coast.
